Pilates is an effective way to develop both strength and flexibility in the body, having both is key to injury prevention!
Concentric strength is the ability to apply force while muscles are shortening, as in lifting a weight into a bicep curl.
Eccentric strength is the ability to control force while muscles are lengthening, as in when the bicep muscle lengthens to lower the weight.
Having both types of strength makes us functionally strong. Think of coming down stairs, having to stretch out to grab items off a shelf, swinging a golf club, or sprinting.
In Pilates we train both types of strength while also creating a stretch.
By practicing Pilates, we develop the ability to move efficiently with proper alignment and with less chance of injury.
